Mark Dragomer - Certified Personal TrainerIf you exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet, you lose weight and stay physically fit. That's hardly a secret.
In fact, if you google "exercise" and "diet," you get nearly 4 million hits prescribing about that many variations of the same advice, many with the addition of special equipment, chemicals and pills.
To help you negotiate this maze to good health, certified personal trainer Mark Dragomer brings a surfer's sensibility.
Dragomer, a slim, fit 56, has been a surfing and fitness buff all his life. He grew up in South Florida, and discovered surfing in his early teens.
Ever since, the auto mechanic has been plying the waves in Costa Rica, France, California, the Caribbean, South America, Central America and all of Florida's coasts – and working out.
Surfing requires a fit body, with upper arm and core strength, balance, and endurance. And that, Dragomer said, is a prescription that works for anyone.
Forget pills, fancy equipment, and fad diets, he says.
"It's all about consistency," Dragomer said, owner of Impact Surfing Fitness. "If you exercise and eat the right foods, positive things will happen."
He tailors programs for his clients, based on their goals, age, condition and ability. He'll train you to better health, in his well-equipped gym in Pompano Beach, or he'll come to your home.
You can focus on strengthening your arms, losing flab, or just feeling better; whatever your goal, Dragomer will build a program of exercise – and encouragement – to help you succeed.
To start, Dragomer said, write down your goals. Make them realistic, but stick to them. Envision where you want to be a week from now, a month, a year.
"You don't have to go to a gym," he said. "Start slowly. Just bike or walk, two or three times a week. But do it consistently. You can always increase it."
Eat small meals, five or six a day, with a correct balance of vegetables, fruits, proteins, carbs and fats. And drink lots of fluids. "No sugar, or sodas, or white breads," Dragomer said.
One of his clients, a woman in her 60s who survived breast cancer, told Dragomer her goal was for everyone to react favorably when she entered the room. Dragomer helped her lose the wattles under her arms and helped her to become more shapely and fit.
"She's addicted to training now," he said. "She's gone way beyond her original goals."
Dragomer knows the road to fitness is not easy. It takes determination.
"I'm not a drill sergeant," he said. "I will give you tough love, but the rewards are worth it. You will feel and look better."
