BROWARD COUNTY, FL. – This is the 7th year in a row that the Broward County Libraries Division has received Susan G. Komen for the Cure grant funds. The grant, administered by The Broward Public Library Foundation, allows the Libraries Division to offer breast cancer programs and information to their customers.
This year the first Susan G. Komen for the Cure event Is the " Breast Cancer Support and Wellness Health Fair" on Saturday, September 24, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC), 2650 Sistrunk Blvd, Fort Lauderdale. More than 20 health related informational tables will be at the fair. There will be blood pressure screenings, a yoga demonstration, and information from health care providers. Susan G. Komen for the Cure information will be available. Attendees can learn about healthy lifestyles for the whole family and sign up to win prizes. Complimentary light refreshments will be available. All events that day are free.
The Memorial Healthcare System mobile mammography van will be at the Health Fair on September 24. Women may be eligible to have their mammogram paid by the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Grant. Prescriptions are desired but not required. To take advantage of this service at the health fair, an appointment must be made. Call 954-276-5595 for more information and to schedule an appointment.
Three prominent physicians will present informative lectures in the auditorium the day of the health fair.
● Dr. Raja Mudad, MD, FACP, Hematology Oncology, Memorial Cancer Institute; Director, Thoracic Oncology Program and member of the Gilda's Club South Florida Professional Healthcare Council, will address the subject "What Do Men Have To Worry About?" at 11 a.m.
Dr. Mudad currently serves as the associate medical director of the Memorial Cancer Institute in Hollywood, FL and is the co-director of the thoracic oncology program at the same facility. He is actively involved in clinical trials in lung cancer and the lung cancer support group at Gilda's Club in Fort Lauderdale.
● Dr. Jennifer Harper, board certified in obstetrics and gynecology, at Holy Cross Medical Group in Fort Lauderdale since 2006, will address two topics of interest to the community. At noon Dr. Harper, a member of the Gilda's Club South Florida Professional Healthcare Council, will speak about "Women's Health Prevention and Education"; and at 1 p.m. Dr. Harper will speak about "How Colorectal Screening Could Save Your Life."
Dr. Harper has a particular interest in using her skills to provide "women's wellness" to her patients, including their emotional, physical and spiritual needs. Dr. Harper is well known for her commitment to addressing community health care issues. She is a frequent speaker on women's health topics and a board member of Gilda's Club of South Florida. Along with other Holy Cross Medical Group physicians, Dr. Harper also contributed her time and medical expertise to those affected by the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti in 2009.
● Dr. William R. Alexis, MD, Memorial Healthcare System, will speak at 2 p.m. about "Cardiovascular Health –Taking Care of Your Heart."
Dr. Alexis practices general, invasive, and interventional cardiology and is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, and interventional cardiology. He has been in practice at Cardiovascular Consultants of South Florida since July 2006 and is on staff at many Broward County hospitals. In 2007, he was recognized as "Doctor of the Year" by his practice. Dr. Alexis is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions. His professional interests include preventive cardiology, vascular medicine and African-American health.
A free yoga demonstration will be presented by Lynette Culp of the Broward County Parks Department, 1:30 to 2 pm, in the library gallery. Simple moves for the breast cancer survivor will be shown and all persons are encouraged to participate.
