3rd Annual Tunnel to Towers Fort Lauderdale 5K Run & Walk

FORT LAUDERDALE – Over 2,000 people will participate in the 3rd Annual Tunnel to Towers Fort Lauderdale 5K Run & Walk this Saturday, September 7th starting at 7:30 a.m. at Huizenga Park, 32 East Las Olas Boulevard.  Sponsored by Patriot National Insurance Group, this event honors both first responders who lost their lives on 9/11 and U.S. Military personnel who were catastrophically injured as a result of their service in Iraq or Afghanistan.  Funds raised will go to building Smart Homes that will enable these military heroes to live more independent lives thanks to interactive technology.

Participants will run/walk a course that includes the Henry E. Kenney Tunnel (New River Tunnel).  This path recreates the steps taken by FDNY Firefighter Steven Siller who ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to reach his squad at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.  Firefighter Siller and 342 other FDNY firefighters lost their lives that fateful day.

A number of Fire Rescue departments have registered to participate in the Run & Walk including:  Ft. Lauderdale Fire Rescue; Hollywood Fire Rescue; City of Miami Fire Rescue and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
