FORT LAUDERDALE, FL -- The Broward Performing Arts Foundation elected three new board members at its annual meeting in September. The new board members are Thomas Oliveri, senior executive of Northern Trust; cardiologist Alan M. Schwartz, M.D.; and entrepreneur and philanthropist Douglas J. Von Allmen.
Thomas R. Oliveri is Senior Market Executive of The Northern Trust Company for Broward County, responsible for a team of professionals who serve high net worth clients and families with comprehensive wealth management services. Oliveri joined Northern Trust in 1999; prior to his current role, he served as Managing Director of Wealth Advisory Services based in Miami, with responsibilities for Northern Trust’s South Florida market. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in finance from the University of South Florida where he graduated Cum Laude. Oliveri has been very active in the civic and not-for-profit communities and currently serves on the following Boards / Committees: Anti-Defamation League, Honorary Regional Board Member; Memorial Foundation and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation, Second Vice Chair; and South Broward Hospital District, Finance Committee Member.
Alan Schwartz, who was raised in South Florida, started his medical career working as a janitor and orderly on the midnight shift at Jackson Memorial Hospital to raise funds for college and medical school. He later attended the University of South Florida College of Medicine and served his internship and residency at the University of Tennessee Center for Health Services. As a fellow at the University of Miami, his focus was on cardiology. Schwartz later received professional and personal recognition from animal lovers all over the world through his pro bono work with gorillas and chimpanzees at animal sanctuaries and zoos. Patients – of the human variety – can visit Schwartz at Tenet Florida Physician Services in Miami, where he has been a family physician since 2011.
Douglas Von Allmen’s impressive career as an entrepreneur has included owning such companies as the Sunsations Sunglass Co., which was later sold to Sunglass Hut, and Beauty Alliance, which was acquired by L’Oréal. Graduating with highest honors from the University of Kentucky’s School of Accountancy, which was later named in his honor, he parlayed his early public accountant career into a lifetime of buying and building businesses. Since moving to Fort Lauderdale in 1994, Von Allmen and his wife Linda have put their philanthropic imprint on our community. They are active members of Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County, where he has served on the executive board for several years. He is a Nova Southeastern University Entrepreneur Hall of Fame honoree. These days, he tests his mettle by putting the pedal to the metal doing track days in race cars, where he is most often the fastest driver.
All three of the recently elected board members have long-standing connections to the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Northern Trust made its first commitment to the original campaign that built the Center. Schwartz has been a benefactor for more than 20 years; and Von Allmen, a benefactor since 2002, most recently made a major gift to the Encore! capital campaign which resulted in the naming of the Von Allmen Plaza.
For more than 25 years, the Broward Performing Arts Foundation has been instrumental in providing support for the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. The Foundation was established in 1985 to deliver the required private funding to build the Center and create an endowment to sustain its operations. Since then, the Foundation has continued to build its endowment and provide funds to support the Broward Center’s programming, education and engagement initiatives for the South Florida community. The Foundation recently completed a successful $58 million capital expansion campaign which renewed and revitalized the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.
