FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – The Museum of Discovery and Science has teamed up with the local 3D company “Becoming 3D”, in partnership with Airwolf, Lulzbot and Robo 3D to bring visitors and guests the fascinating and groundbreaking world of 3D printing, occurring every day through December 31, 2015. Guests will be able to watch as three innovative 3D printers produce some amazing pieces from famous characters, to shapes, sea life molds and more! Three printers are available on site for demonstrations, which include: Airwolf 3D AXIOM Printer, the LulzBot Mini, and the Robo3D R1. Watch a video here.
“We are very excited to partner with the Museum of Discovery and Science to bring this dynamic 3D technology to the kids and families of Fort Lauderdale,” said Becoming 3D CEO Grant Sadowski. “The museum is a terrific venue to expose both children and adults to one of the fastest growing technologies in the world. Our goal is to increase awareness in order to foster creativity and innovation.”
3D printing or additive manufacturing is a process of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital file. The creation of a 3D printed object is achieved using additive processes. In an additive process an object is created by laying down successive layers of material until the entire object is created. Each of these layers can be seen as a thinly sliced horizontal cross-section of the eventual object.
To build a 3D object with a 3D printer, you start by creating a 3D design on a computer screen using special software. This image is called a CAD (Computer Aided Design) file. Then this file is sent to the printer and, along the way, the graphic is sliced up into hundreds (sometimes thousands) of very thin layers. The printer then gets to work and starts building the object by extruding the material on a platform, one layer at a time, over and over, building from the bottom upwards.
It produces durable objects of a high quality, easier and cheaper than making traditional molds, and some 3D printers can even make multiple objects at once.
