FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – In October the Humane Society of Broward County introduced our "Purrs & Tales" reading program and it has become so popular additional times are being added. Children ages 5 – 12 were invited to participate in the shelter's newest educational endeavor. The boys and girls can relax and practice their reading skills while giving companionship to the friendly felines in one of the new community cat rooms at the adoption center.
Many shelters across the country, including the Humane Society of Broward County, have reading programs with dogs at local libraries and schools. However few offer reading programs with felines. According to Caroline Crane, Vice President of Education at the HSBC, "We thought this would be a great utilization of our new community cat rooms. Not only are the cats benefiting from extra company but the children are too by practicing reading in a non-judgmental environment."
