New River Middle School teacher Elizabeth Fahy is taking part in an exciting deep sea voyage, all in the name of science. Fahy is now aboard the Exploration Vessel (E/V) Nautilus, after being selected as a 2016 Science Communication Fellow. Fahy, along with the Corps of Exploration, set sail aboard the E/V Nautilus on May 10, 2016 and returns May 29, 2016. During the voyage, the E/V Nautilus is exploring the waters off of Victoria, Canada to restore the world’s largest undersea cable observatory with Ocean Networks Canada.
Fahy is one of 17 educators and 22 students from around the world selected from a competitive pool of applicants by the nonprofit Ocean Exploration Trust (OET), to participate in the 2016 Nautilus Exploration Program expedition. OET was founded in
2008 by Dr. Robert Ballard, who discovered the Titanic shipwreck. The OET’s mission is to explore the ocean, seeking out new discoveries in the fields of geology, biology, maritime history, archaeology, physics and chemistry, while pushing the boundaries of STEM education and technological innovation.
Fahy is a National Board certified teacher at New River Middle School, teaching Marine Science and Ocean Exploration. As part of her journey aboard the E/V Nautilus, Fahy is participating in live question and answer sessions on May 17, 2016 and May 20, 2016 with Broward County Public Schools elementary, middle and high school students. In addition, New River Middle students are conducting labs and experiments alongside the E/V Nautilus and Fahy, making the connections with what they are learning in class more relevant.
“I am thrilled to be a part of the 2016 Ocean Exploration E/V Nautilus team,” said Fahy. “My love for the ocean has been a lifetime passion, and the chance to share my experiences with the next generation of ocean pioneers, scientists, and conservationists will be the greatest contribution I can provide to the students of today.”
The public can also join Fahy’s adventure while she is at sea via streaming video on nautiluslive.org and via social media on Twitter @EVNautilus, and on Facebook and Instagram at NautilusLive.
