FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – ABB OPTICAL GROUP, one of the nation’s leading distributors of optical products, is pleased to announce that Lighthouse of Broward will receive a $1,000 grant through the company’s third annual ABB Cares program, which recognizes and celebrates outstanding non-profit organizations throughout the country.
Nominated by local optometrist Robin Shorrock, O.D. of East Side Vision Center, Lighthouse of Broward strives to provide specialized rehabilitation and healthcare solutions that enhance independence and productivity of children and adults who are blind or visually impaired. The ABB Cares grant will fund professional staff who offer direct services to clients that enable them to be fully a part of their families, schools, work and communities.
“I have been involved with the organization for 10 years and I have seen firsthand the difference they make,” said Dr. Shorrock, who has been on the Board of Directors for 10 years. “What may seem like an everyday activity is a major obstacle for someone visually impaired. Lighthouse of Broward helps patients overcome these difficulties and is truly a beacon of hope for those who need it most.”
Since 1973, Lighthouse of Broward has grown from a small, local group of volunteers and professionals to an accredited, full service educational and rehabilitation agency. Every day the staff are dedicated to enhancing the independence and quality of life for children and adults who are blind or visually impaired.
“Direct services are provided through three distinct children’s programs and three adult programs,” said Dr. Shorrock. “The professional staff provide specific training for daily living activities such as household chores, safe travel skills, use of technology and job seeking skills. The goal is to provide them the tools to help them live a normal, productive life.”
The ABB Cares program recognizes charities that have been nominated by eye care professionals across the country for exceptional programming and community impact. Other 2016 grant recipients are: Addi’s Faith Foundation in Kingwood, Texas; Project Wee Care in Omaha, Neb.; Bobcat Backpacks Program in Radford, Va.; All God’s People in Orland Park, Ill.; Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque in Dubuque, Iowa; and Los Alamitos Youth Center in Los Alamitos, Calif.
“The staff and volunteers of Lighthouse of Broward are dedicated and passionate. They provide invaluable services and care to the local community,” said Brad Weinbrum, president of ABB OPTICAL GROUP. “We applaud the work that they do and we thank Dr. Shorrock for bringing them to our attention. ABB Cares is all about honoring those organizations, like Lighthouse of Broward, that have a positive impact on those who need it most.”
