The Florida Department of Financial Services has announced the launch of My Safe Florida Condo, a pilot program to assist eligible Florida condominiums in strengthening their properties against hurricanes. Similar to the already established, My Safe Florida Home program, My Safe Florida Condo was approved during the 2024 legislative session and offers condo associations free mitigation inspections and grant funds to make wind-mitigation improvements. Wind insurance premium savings are also possible with program eligibility.
To be eligible, condo associations must be within 15 miles of the coastline and receive their association’s board approval through a majority vote. My Safe Florida Condo has $30 million in funding for this initial pilot phase. The total grant amount an association can receive for wind-mitigation projects such as roof, exterior and garage doors, windows, skylights, and other wind-mitigation improvements, is $175,000.
Resources for the program are limited during this pilot phase. Condo associations within the City of Fort Lauderdale are encouraged to apply as soon as possible at https://mysafeflcondo.com/. The webpage also offers program details and information, including the full Florida Statute on the program, and more.
Condo associations and residents can also learn more about the new Florida condo laws regarding condo reserves, transparency, accountability, rights and responsibilities of condo owners and associations and more, through the Department of Business and Professional Regulation at: https://condos.myfloridalicense.com/. The webpage is available in English and Spanish, and residents can ask the DBPR questions, request their assistance, and sign up for educational opportunities.
