WASHINGTON, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- Ford Motor Co. is recalling 6,146 Escape vehicles due to leaking glycol that could cause an engine compartment fire, U.S. regulators said.

The recall involves model year 2013 Escape vehicles made from Oct. 5, 2011, through Aug. 31, 2012, and sold with 1.6L engines.

The cylinder head cup plug – also called the freeze plug – on the vehicles could become dislodged. This could cause coolant to spill onto a hot engine, which could cause a fire as it evaporates, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.

Ford said it would fix the problem free of charge to consumers by instructing dealerships to seal the existing plug and add a secondary plug cover.
