Something old? Something not so new? The place to find it? A consignment shop. Fort Lauderdale has plenty -- for just about every need and every taste.

Dedicated fashionistas can find “gently worn” designer bags, baubles, dresses and shoes at 80 percent off from what the same thing would cost new.

A number of upscale shops offer used Chanel, Fendi, Prada, Giorgio Armani, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton, Hermes, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, Versace, and Roberto Cavalli, in a variety of sizes and styles.

Homeware bargain hunters, too, can find an eclectic range of furniture, antiques, collectibles, bric-a-brac, and artwork to fit just about any budget.

How does it work for sellers? The consignors and the shops split the sales price – commonly with 40 percent for the seller and 60 percent for the consignment shop. Some stores won’t take items worth less than a certain amount; most set a 90-day limit for an item to sell. Several places only view items by appointment; some now will consider submissions online.
