FORT LAUDERDALE, FL -- The world’s most advanced cinema technology has arrived. Are you ready? The AutoNation® IMAX 3D Theater is upgrading to the new IMAX with Laser projection technology and will be closed from September 1 - 29, 2016, for the installation. When the theater reopens on September 30, 2016, dual 4K laser projectors will revolutionize the way audiences experience 2D and 3D films on the BIGGEST screen in South Florida. The AutoNation IMAX 3D Theater will be the only theater in Florida where moviegoers can experience the power of IMAX with Laser.
Audiences deserve more than just a movie. They deserve an experience that transports them to awesome new worlds and engages their senses and emotions. As part of its commitment to pushing boundaries and doing things never before done in cinema, IMAX has undertaken the largest R&D investment in the company’s history to develop its next-generation projection and sound system featuring groundbreaking laser technology.
IMAX with Laser represents a quantum leap in cinema technology – providing audiences with the sharpest, brightest, clearest and most vivid digital images ever, combined with a whole new level of immersive audio.
The IMAX with Laser system features two 4K projectors running concurrently with sub-pixel alignment in both 2D and 3D formats. This delivers a perceived resolution greater than 4K. IMAX has completely redesigned the optics by removing the prism, commonly found in laser and xenon projectors, and replacing it with an IMAX patented free-space light engine and incorporating an invar frame offering brighter images, intense colors, and incredible detail that will leave you in awe.
The IMAX with Laser upgrade also includes an immersive, 12-channel sound system featuring 114 speakers capable of 52,000 watts of digital sound. Whether it’s a pin drop or feeling the heart-palpitating force of a volcano, audiences will experience a new kind of visceral sound experience. IMAX with Laser is a blend of science and art to deliver a cinema experience that suspends disbelief and transports audiences to new worlds. It’s the difference between watching a movie and being a part of one.
Kim Cavendish, President/CEO said, “Our new 4K IMAX with Laser technology will enhance the way our visitors view a film from the sights, to the sound, down to the feel of the film – all on our six-story high screen. Several years ago, when it became clear that film studios were moving from film to digital releases, we added an IMAX 2K Xenon digital projection system so that we could continue to offer our audiences the full line-up of Hollywood and documentary films that they had come to expect. With the addition of the new IMAX with Laser technology, we are continuing our commitment to offer our audiences the ultimate cinema experience. This new technology is the definition of the complete IMAX experience. Guests will be left breathless and astonished as they embark on an unforgettable journey known as the “science of cinema” and experience an unparalleled cinematic adventure.”
The addition of the new 4K IMAX with Laser system brings moviegoers the biggest, brightest and best format around. Visitors will enjoy a full line-up of amazing IMAX films to complement our new system, beginning on Friday, September 30, 2016 with Deepwater Horizon, starring Mark Wahlberg. Additional special engagement feature films opening this fall include: Jack Reacher: Never Go Back with Tom Cruise (October 21 – 27, 2016); Inferno starring Tom Hanks (October 27 – November 3, 2016); Doctor Strange 3D starring Benedict Cumberbatch (November 3 -17, 2016); Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 3D featuring Colin Farrell (November 18, 2016) and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story 3D, opening on December 15, 2016, and showing through the holidays.
