FT. LAUDERDALE, FL. -- Floranada Elementary School will feature best-selling children's books author Harvey E. Oyer at its Cultural Night Showcase on Friday, April 27, 2012, from 5:30 – 8 p.m. The showcase will include a student art exhibition and the spring book fair. Floranada Elementary is located at 5251 NE 14th Way, Fort Lauderdale.
Oyer will talk with students and parents about his second book in a series, The Adventures of Charlie Pierce: The Last Egret, which fourth grade students are currently reading and learning about the importance of conservation and saving the Florida Everglades. The Last Egret follows the real-life adventures of Charlie Pierce, Oyer's great-grand uncle who, along with his teenage friends, traveled deep into the Florida Everglades to hunt plume birds for their beautiful valuable feathers. Students will learn that the process and techniques they use in writing are similar to those used by the famous author.
Oyer has won numerous awards for his Adventures of Charlie Pierce children's book series, including a Mom's Choice Award, a Florida Book Award and the James Horgan Book Award. A native Floridian, he is currently one of the best-selling children's books authors in Florida.
The Cultural Night event will also showcase Floranada students in a special performance. Broken Sound Country Club will cater multicultural food and refreshments. Students' art will be on display throughout the school.
