In honor of national Digital Learning Day, Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) is spotlighting the BCPS collaborative partnership with the non-profit organization Innovations for Learning (IFL).  Through this initiative, BCPS is implementing a digital literacy program for kindergarten and first grade students that integrates classroom instruction and community-based tutors to deliver interactive instruction at 13 BCPS Title I schools (123 classrooms).

As part of the IFL model, students access customized digital curriculum through iPads, iTouches and Mp3 players.  In addition, schools have access to full-time literacy coaches and online mentors through the IFL TutorMate program.  The TutorMate program provides an opportunity for corporate executives and employees to tutor students in the classroom via an online system.  The TutorMate mentoring program kicked off in January 2014 with several local agencies, including the State Attorney’s Office Circuit 17, Broward College, JM Family Enterprises, AT&T, Broward After School Programs, the City Council of Lauderhill, and Advanced Roofing, all participating in the program.
The IFL partnership is just one of the recent technology-based initiatives spearheaded by BCPS.  Earlier this school year, the District launched the Digital 5: Pathways to Personalized Learning and Code.org initiatives.

“Today’s students embrace technology.  It engages them and makes them excited about learning,” said Superintendent Robert W. Runcie.  “By providing our students and teachers with new, innovative ways to incorporate technology and digital resources into their curriculum, particularly amongst our youngest students, we are able to create a strong foundation for their future educational success.”

"It is our responsibility to give students the proper tools to help them achieve success and Innovations for Learning affords our students with technology that differentiates their instruction to meet their specific student needs. My students and teachers absolutely love the program,” said Christina Mendendez, Principal of Rock Island Elementary.

Seth Weinberger, Executive Director of IFL, said, "Broward County has quickly become one of our favorite school districts to collaborate with. Not only does the staff from top to bottom recognize the importance of early literacy, but they also have the resolve to tackle the challenges with innovative solutions. It is exciting to contemplate the amount of student progress that is possible in this environment."
